Mutharika returns the favour to Chalamanda

0

President Peter Mutharika through his Democratic Progressive Party DPP has returned the favour to one of his legal counsel Noel Chalamanda by awarding him a mayor position for the Blantyre city.

The DPP amassed more ward councilors in the southern region Blantyre inclusive and automatically a DPP candidate was to become the city mayor.

DPP councilor for Misesa ward Luis Ngalande whose name was nominated to contest along with Chalamanda and other two candidates withdrew from the race at the eleventh hour upon instructions from the DPP leadership.

“I have been instructed to withdraw from the race but I cannot name the people who have made such a directive because I will look like am not a loyal person, so let me say that I will not contest” lamented Ngalande.

Inside sources revealed that the DPP forced all its councilors to vote for Chalamanda in the race and results have proven the issue right as Chalamanda triumphed despite being an independent candidate who did not have sound backing on his own in the mayor ship elections.

The reward to Chalamanda comes a week after Mutharika also awarded his former legal counsel Kalekeni Kaphale with an Attorney General position.

The development has attracted a condemnation from a political commentator who says that it is against the tenets of democracy that calls for a free and fair environment to enable everyone an opportunity to contest in an election.

The political analyst Blessings Chinsinga of Chancelor College said the DPP is best known for spin doctoring political situation locally.

He said the violence will blindfold the people that they were against Ngalande’s pull out when actually the leadership knew the plot.

He said that if Ngalande had pulled out of the race on personal reasons the DPP had all the chance to nominate another candidate who would carry the day considering the party’s majority in numbers.
