Brigadier Matewere overpowered the Terrorists… More drama at the Airport..

The year was 1972,South African plane was hijacked by two Lebanese Nationals and ordered the pilot to fly to the Middle east or they would blow it up.

The Pilot managed to convince the hijackers that they would have to stop over for refueling in Malawi before proceeding to the middle east.

During that time,GRACIANO MATEWERE was a Brigadier of the Malawi Army and later he would head the army after this crisis.

Hastings kamuzu Banda has scheduled trip to the UK in two days time when the crisis was unfolded.

Matewere was given the daunting task of solving the hijack drama b4 Kamuzu’s trip and Materewe was warned “TO SOLVE THE DRAMA WITH NO OR MINIMAL BLOODSHED”.

After two days of fruitless negotiations between Matewere and the hijackers,Brigadier decided to scare the hijackers by shooting at the plane.

Kamuzu was meanwhile becoming increasingly impatient and had issued a final instructions that Matewere should use whatever at his disposal.

When the hijackers showed no sign of giving up,MATEWERE made another plan . During the negotiations the Lebanese had asked for some cash in US dollars and assurance of safe passage.

Brigadier Matewere tricked the two Lebanese that he was bringing a briefcase full of cash,he then boldly went aboard the plane and disarmed the hijackers without firing a shot.
