Fishermen of Likoma and Chizumulu islands are in wrangles following the use of electric bulbs by fishermen from Likoma when fishing around Chizumulu territory.
The fishermen claim that those from Likoma are not respecting the law since it was agreed that all should desist from the use of electrical bulbs when fishing.
One of the concerned fishermen Alick Matebu said that the technology that Likoma fishermen prefer is hazardous to some species of fish.
“If the use of electric bulbs continues then some species will be affected.
“There is a need to preserve the species that is why we want our fellow fishermen to stop using the bulbs,” he said.
He added that all fishermen from Chizumulu Island are cooperative as they stopped using the electric bulbs.
“Those from Likoma are the ones who do not understand the danger that is being posed by the technology, but they have to stop,” he said.
