Malawi govt close plastic shop in Lilongwe


Malawi government has closed one of the largest plastic distributing shops, Aeroplastics limited in Lilongwe for contravening plastic ban.

Confirming the development spokesperson for the Department of Environment and Climate Change in the Ministry of
Mining, Energy and Natural Resources, Sangwani Phiri said the ministry warned officials of the shop to stop distributing banned plastics.

“We set a warning letter for them to stop distributing plastics that are less than 60 micron meters but it seemed they continue to contravene the 2015 environment policy” said Phiri.

Phiri further said the ministry understands that some vendors are still selling the banned plastics,therefore they are to make sure the ban is effective.

“We will be alert to make sure the policy is effictive nation wide,a campaign will be conducted in every district of the country to see if what the policy demands has been adopted”He Added.

Meanwhile government has set K40,000 as a fine of contravening the policy.

Malawi government issued a ban on plastic products due difficult in
decompositions which rendered the environment a platform for undecomposed wastes.
