MCP tears APM apart for bloated UN entourage

0

The main opposition Malawi Congress Party MCP has taken a swipe at president Peter Mutharika for taking a bloated entourage to the United Nations Annual General Assembly in New York United States of America.

Among those included on the trip include party loyalists and traditional chiefs who have nothing to do at the UN assembly apart from shopping and basking in the sun.

Estimates indicate that about a billion kwacha has been spent to carter for 115 people who have undertaken the trip for return air tickets, accommodation, meals and travel allowances.

Apart from the cost of 115 people the president has also gone with his aides and a wife who have chartered a presidential jet and have gotten themselves hefty allowances all costing the tax payer around a billion kwacha.

This comes as 25 districts of the country faces hunger and the president has sounded an alarm for urgent food assistance requiring over MK80 billion a development that has been condemned by MCP leadership saying Mutharika needed to show a sense of remorse that austerity measures be prime in decision making about external trips.

MCP Publicity Secretary Jessie Kabwila described president Mutharika’s global trotting trend as unfortunate and smacks lacking peoples welfare at heart.

“We have always said that this government is cruel to its own people, how can a president take such a big entourage to feast in US leaving people starving requiring urgent food assistance, how can the president be so cruel to take hundreds of people to do nothing apart from squandering tax payers money when citizens are dying in hospitals due to lack of drugs.

“Malawians are watching all this and they are better judges, it is quite unfortunate that those leading the nation stopped listening long time ago after taking the mantle of power which they did not anticipated at all hence all these inhumane actions”, said Kabwila.

Economists and political analysts have also not taken government’s action kindly as they have bashed authorities for poor decisions on austerity measures by extravagance spending on foreign trips.
