Unless there is a radical change in focus and drive, Vice President Saulosi Chilima’s public service reforms are simply a DPP window dressing tactic and destined to fail and ruin his political capital and his integrity.
The Constitution, the Presidency, The banking laws, the political establishment, the government’s relationship with the media establishment, and the academic establishment, are all inherently corrupt and in need of reform. But it is clear that Chilima’s reforms are afraid of piercing the heart of the problem, and tackling where the real rot is.
Without addressing the problem of corruption, the reforms are simply a case of self-indulgence and cheap politicking and incapable of improving the lives of the poor.
Furthermore, ideologically inclined citizens must not hide behind the safety of theory; ideas must be applied. One of the truest tests of any reform is the ability to change the attitudes of narrow-minded people from worshipping power and waiting for crumbs and handouts, to a new sense of self belief and responsibility for one’s own destiny.
When the masses can challenge the power establishment for transparency, accountability and good governance, then we have achieved true REFORM that TRANSFORMS. – Reform To Transform.
