Breaking News:

Appeals made by the so-called non-governmental organisation trading under the banner of Drug Fight Malawi, that Big Bullets should look for alternative sponsorship other than deal with tobacco manufacturers, Nyasa Manufacturing Company, is out of the equation and that should not be entertained.

I have never heard or read about this NGO, which claims to champion the cause against the use of tobacco, marijuana, alcohol and drug abuse until two days ago at a time when our brains were so engrossed in the issue that will determine Malawi football destiny, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) elections.

This is the battle that needs our wholesome attention because there are 36 Fam councillors that will decide our football destiny in Mangochi next week.

It is with regret that instead of commenting on such serious issues I will devote my precious time, space and ink writing about the issue which has been raised by this so-called NGO and, in my view, lacks substance.

Seriously speaking, in a country where a lot of children are always high on drugs, it would be ideal for these honourable ladies and gentlemen to devote much of their energy and resources to addressing that other than fighting a team that is 100 times bigger than them.

Possibly, they do not know how long it has taken Bullets to secure this sponsorship, and how its players have been suffering over these years.

It is absurd for Drug Fight Malawi to propose the annulment of the sponsorship without offering alternatives to the team that is so desperate for money.

After all, tobacco is Malawi’s green gold and why does this NGO not lead a campaign to stop tobacco cultivation instead of fighting those on the receiving end?

It is ironic that the more such NGOs are being formed to fight against drug abuse in a country reeling from dire poverty, the more our youth are indulging in drug and alcohol abuse.

While the members of this little-known NGO sit comfortably in their homes, eating sumptuous meals, Bullets players sleep on empty stomachs.

While members of this little-known NGO enjoy donor support and spend millions of kwacha organising such hopeless press conferences, Bullets executive committee spends sleepless nights thinking about how to feed the players.

It is, therefore, ridiculous for this NGO to start punching holes in this deal which has taken the soccer fraternity years to secure.

After all, this is a nation which has lost trust and confidence in NGOs because they are regarded as merchants of doom who can easily betray this nation with a few pieces of shekels. To me, most of NGOs have lost their relevance. Sports Perspective; Malawi News December 5-12,2015
