A body of a suspected poacher was discovered on December 27 in a decomposed state and buried on the spot, police and brother of the victim have confirmed.
We understand that Patrick Maya, 52 who used to enter the Liwonde National Park to poach, entered the National Park on December 25 to hunt animals but never returned home.
His brother Maxwell Makina disclosed that Patrick is susoected to have been killed by an elephant in the Park on Christmas day as the man entered the park illegally to hunt with his dogs.
Eastern Region Police Deputy Spokesperson Otilia Kumanga confirmed of the development.
Poaching is common in Liwonde National park despite an electric wire fixed around the Park. Poachers find their way into the protected area by disabling the electrified fence system. Mid this year tons of wire snares were impounded in the Park which poachers set to trap animals.
The Park is managed by a South African based Africa Parks.
