Four Councillors arrested in Mangochi

2

Police in Mangochi have arrested three more Counselors on suspicion of abuse of public funds, three days after they zeroed on a Mbvumba Councillor Shadreck Chibondo Bandawho reported to have lost government money amounting to K 2.8m in a Lodge at night.

One of three who are in the fresh cash is a Councillor for Maldeco Ward who is believed to have offered himself a contract to be supplying bricks and sand for a certain project to the chagrin of the general community.

The case Shadreck Chibondo Banda has opened up a can of worms as more DPP Councillors who are taking things for granted would be zeroed in.

It is said that the OC who many believe was sent to the hot lake shore district on transfer as art of punishment for not been supportive to the DPP, was not sure whether it was right to exercise his professionalism or play it cool for fear of once again touching on raw nerves of the no nonsense DPP, with NIB head, Nicholas Dausi waiting in the wings for any reported DPP unfriendly official to deal with him/her.

The Police have confirmed that the law has started working on the Councillors as investigations into the matter progress.

We have gained information that the Police want Councillor Shadreck Banda and other three to be interrogated on a number of issues so that the nation should know what exactly went wrong, otherwise they fear that some will link his conduct to Cash gate by the party, bearing in mind that not long another Councillor from the same ruling DPP was arrested in Zomba while another faced the same whip in Phalombe, putting the party to shame as they are failing to play their tricks properly..

Banda is said to have reported to Police that thieves broke into his room at a lodge in Mangochi and stole the money meant for development project in his area but many wonder why he had to keep the money with him in a Lodge when he could have travelled home same night.

“The MP for the area has vehicles and at the same time the Council could also offer him transport if he was stranded, otherwise someone somewhere knows something and government should well on this,” warned a young man in the ward.

Mangochi Officer In Charge Elijah Kachikuwo has told the press that Cllr Banda has been detained because of the circumstances surrounding the stolen millions as something are not adding up to.

“Why is it that he took all that money and decided to put up at a lodge? How does the Mangochi district council disburse development money.

“Does a Council give out to a single person like thar? There are several unanswered questions and we need answers for him to be cleared,” he said for the Police, adding that the other puzzle is that Mangochi District Council officials deny to have given out any cash to the Councillor.

Shadreck Chibondo Banda aged 30 comes from Village Binali in T/A Nankumba, District Mangochi, and is Ward Councillor for Mbvumba in Monkey bay. He reported the case against unknown sayinf the case occurred on February 10 2016 at Mt Lodge in the district at around 1940hrs.

Said a source at the Police headquarters: “Brief facts are that the reporter booked a room at the said lodge with 2.8m Malawi Kwacha in his bag. Then he was visited by his friends (Councillors) then they all went out leaving his room locked.

“But when back he only learned that the room was open & money stolen. It is said the money was for government and was meant for development for his ward.”

Could it be his colleagues played tricks over him? The case is under MG/CR/56/02/16 and Afriem shall keep you posted.

There is no voice from DPP; Chilungamo, Chitukuko……
