Dangerous bank breaking suspects are in police custody, following a successiful raid by law enforcers, Nkhotakota Police Publicist Williams Kaponda has confirmed the arrest.
The notorious suspects named Weton Humba (28) from Saiwa village T/A Makwangwala in Ntcheu and Jeffrey Phiri (38) of Jalasi, Mangochi district are said to have been untouchable long-standing thugs who mainly targeted banks and other institutions. Their gang is feared to have carried out serious criminal acts across the country and beyond including Mozambique where they recently hijacked a car and left three occupants dead.
On their fateful mission, the two allegedly used CK 3369 VITS OLD MODEL YELLOWISH motor vehicle when they attacked the New Building Society (NBS) bank in Nkhotakota district on night of 1-2 March and were arrested in Lilongwe while on the run.
According to Kaponda, police identified the vehicle they were using as one similar used in most bank robbery operation including the historical grand theft that took place in Mzuzu in early 2015.
Kaponda also said police recovered weapons during what is dubbed ‘breakthrough arrest’.
“Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) computer and 2 HP computers were stolen during the effective robbery”, Kaponda told this piblication.
NBS bank service manager Mr. Emmanuel Lusinga (43) is on record to have been the one who reported to police after the break in.
“The thugs entered into the bank premises by climbing over the face and they broke a rear window. After getting in, they attempted to break into a strong room using gas cylinders, but failed to enter”, Said Kaponda.
