Big Issues, News

The much talked about MK1.2 billion tax evasion that Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), is demanding from the Automobile Company, Mike Appel and Gatto was already reported to have been collected by a senior Democratic Progressive Party official, Malawi.24 investigation has revealed.

The clip in our possession is clearly showing the official pulling bags of money to the vehicle which bears MG number plate which we cannot reveal on this forum for obvious reasons. On Monday, MRA unprecedentedly sealed off the offices of Mike Appel and Gatto Limited in Blantyre and Lilongwe and seized a number of cars in the company’s showrooms for failing to remit the taxes.

But the company through a hired private practising lawyer, Frank Mbeta has obtained a court order restraining the tax-collecting body from effecting its Distrait Order.

However, the court order came in too late as MRA had already closed down the company’s offices and seized several vehicles from its showrooms in Blantyre.

It is yet to be seen as to what the next step would be for the car dealer who owes government K1, 236,036,927.20. What course of action the company will take.

From our inside source, however, the owner is very bitter and may let the cat out of the bag if the MRA insists to hold on to their view. The company claims it owes government through MRA no money.

Mike Appeal and Gatto are official dealers and distributors of General Motors car brands which include Chevrolet, GMC, Hummer, Opel and Vauxhall. The company is also a distributor of Isuzu motor vehicles and trucks.

The company has been in this country for many years and knows the importance of remitting taxes to government. There is no reason for it therefore to evade any taxes.

This is a hiccup that has been created because of the ruling party that is desperately looking for financial resources needed for party operations.
Soon the worms will be out of the can!
