The US government has said it is happy that the Malawi government has at least shown some commitment in preserving wildlife by destroying 2.6 tons of ivory worth MK5 billion.
This comes in the wake of the exercise held at the Mzuzu High Court premises on Monday this week.
The exercise attracted the attention of Wildlife international bodies, the Malawi Army and Parks and Wildlife officials.
“The destruction of 2.6 tons of ivory sends a clear message to ivory traffickers and their customers that Malawi will not tolerate illegal wildlife trade.” reads a posting on FB.
The statement adds: “Congratulations to Malawi on the destruction of 2.6 tons of ivory this morning, sending a clear message to ivory traffickers and their customers that Malawi will not tolerate illegal wildlife trade.”
However the decision to burn the said ivory has attracted mixed reactions from the general public with others describing it as a lose to the country’s economy. Afriem will keep you posted as the comments unveil.
