Big Issues, News

After being handed a suspended sentence and being allowed to go home by the court, Vincent Wandale has been called a hero for Thyolo and Mulanje the governing DPP has failed to destroy.

Thyolo based Blessings Mathiya said: “Wandale is a Champion and the leader in the Lhomwe belt who listens to the people.

“Everyone know we have a big problem and we need land. This problem is the same kamuzu noticed and acted according to the need of the people. Kamuzu bought land and gave it to the people. Why is this government failing to do such a simple thing,” he asked.

Blessings Mathiya is calling APM to do what Wandale wanted, buy the unused land, give it to the people and prove he is fit to be a president.

The leader of Peoples Land Organisation, Vincent Wandale has been given an 18 months suspended sentence for the land crimes he committed.

Senior magistrate, Thokozan Soko said that Wandale has been handed such a sentence because he is the first offender.

“He is the first offender and also he is only 42 years of age, these are the reasons that have led to such a sentence,” said Soko.

The magistrate also told Wandale to pay K100 000 that will bonded to government.

Wandale has also been told to stay away from trouble to avoid revoking the wrath of the law in the immediate future.

Wandale who is among the people who declared Thyolo and Mulanje an independent state was arrested for trespassing and unauthorised use of land.

Wandale and his followers resolted into grabbing land from estate owners claiming the estate owners got the land illegally from the locals during the colonial era.

Whats with people and free things? Why should somebody buy land for them? This handout attitude is the reason why Malawi is failing to rise above poverty, I don’t support handouts especially to able bodied people of course the elderly and disabled can be given for free but why not propose something more tangible? Mr. Wandale why not suggest something realistic
like cheap leases where the people can rent the land at a very minimal cost or even buy the land at a very cheap price, value comes with working for something. Zongolandilazi sizisamalidwa baba don’t you think its time you teach these Malawians to fish nanga mukaapatsa the land, muwapatsanso feteleza kapena building materials. Please guide these pple to know that they can rise above poverty by themselves not necessarily through hasndouts

    • Aaron Flywell Phiri November 9, 2016 at 11:00 am -  Reply

Simply the land has to be given back to owners (natives) and that is not a handout. The land was unfairly grabbed from them by then the govt from my understanding of things.

    • Tina Mpeta-Phiri Namalima November 9, 2016 at 11:33 am -  Reply

I hope the grabbing didn’t take place during colonization coz then everyone experienced it. People shd start empowering the communities so that pple shd be independent osati chilichonse kufuna kupangilidwa. But if it was grabbed from them and can easily be proven no need to even buy it for them angolanda the grabber ndikuwapatsa anthu

Remember Tina, at the end of slave trade, missionaries wanted to introduce legitimate trade to replace slave trade. They invited european traders and estate owners to come to Nyasaland. These estates bought the land legally from the collonial government. If we want to occupy this land we have no option but to buy from them. Any other reclamation is illegal.

When I posted this soon after his arrest, I received some criticism. Now we are way down on our land

The current hot issue about land in Thyolo and Mulanje districts is unnegotiable. The land belongs to the native Malawians who live in these districts.

Colonialists snatched the land from our ancestors through deceptive techniques, caught some of them as slaves, and used others in Thangata. To this date, they have lion’s share of of our motherland Malawi. The worst thing is that some pieces of land have been left unused for decades of years yet the land owners and their children have no place to plant cassava for their bellies.

A case in my home village, Nkolokosa in Thyolo district, in which Nchima Tea Estate claimed ownership of the land spared for graveyard at Namiyale just 15 years ago clearly exhibits cruelty of the Estate owners.

It is therefore of little sense to keep in custody the activists and the poor and hungry Malawians who long for place to construct a home.

The land belongs to Malawians not foreigners®
