The minister of Local government, Kondwani Nankhumwa swindled Malawians by using part of the funding that was meant to build telephone centers to buy bicycles, motorbikes and an ambulance which he donated in his constituency, Afriem has learnt.
According to reports, construction of the telephone centers were under the ministry of information, but were later transferred to the Local government ministry.
As per information from the Local government, Kondwani Nankhumwa is abusing local government ministry funds.
A top official from the Local government ministry said: ” Nankhumwa and other ministers use government money like their’s because the government does not audit ministries and other government departments regularly.
“The items that Nankhumwa distributed were bought using funds meant for the construction of telephone centers,” he said.
He added that Nankhumwa conived with contractors to over charge government and share the money.
“The money is coming from contractors building the telephone centres. Many of these centers are being built in the Southern region.
“The cost of one telephone center was pegged at K14 million while the cost to construct one center is just K6 million,” he said, adding:
“Just recently, Nankhumwa authorised the construction of some telephone centres at K14 million each and used the remainder to finance his donation.
“Before he donated the motorbikes , bicycles and the ambulance, the items were being kept at the warehouse of hon Khamisa from Thyolo.
Nankhumwa hired owner of Mulanje Shoprite and Mike Chilwe to construct the telephone centers.
