CHASOWA COMMITTED SUICIDE-POLICE

In the turn of events, at the moment when people expect truth and nothing but the truth, Malawi Police have insisted following their communication with the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs that the forth year Mechanical Engineering student at the center of murder investigation since 2011 committed suicide contrary to general public and Robert Chasowa Commission of Inquiry’s view. It must be noted that although Chasowa’s death happened in 2011, the DPP government showed no interest in investigations so as to help with finding the cause of this death but left the public to speculation. It took the death of Bingu for a Commissioner of Inquiry to be assembled by the PP government almost a year after. Although the findings by both the commission and post-mortem examination Report and a further examination of the photographs taken during the process, show that Robert died from injuries as a result of being assaulted three times with a blunt object to the skull, causing fractures of several skull bones leading to bleeding inside the skull and brain (Commission Report p16), one would find it difficult that a professional police could come up with such a conclusion for a serious murder case. While the commission established it as a murder case “The Commission finds that the theory of suicide is not supported by any evidence whatsoever other than the mere presence of the alleged suicide note. To the contrary, from all the attendant circumstances and the evidence obtained by the Commission, Robert was killed” Ibid p20. As eventually the police settles for conspiracy of suicide by faking a suicide note “The Commission finds that the Police acted most unprofessionally at the scene of incident as a result of which useful evidence was lost. Subsequently the Police gave the Pathologist unsolicited information in the form of the alleged suicide note after the post-mortem examination. The Commission finds this to have been a deliberate attempt to influence the decision of the Pathologist to perpetuate the suicide theory.” Can Malawi trust Police with the way they have concluded this case with fabricated information? The description of police conduct during investigation shows incredibility. The police is the institution that is supposed to find the truth on crimes and not cover it. Malawi was presented with an autopsy report that clearly states it cannot be suicide. We have a report from a Presidential Committee more or less similar and that found the people involved in the murder of this student. Why have the police failed to couple the Inquiry report with the Presidential Committee report for their conclusion? What is going wrong with our police and this government? The Police need to be overhauled so that it can operate independently of Political Interference. The nation cannot have the Police Commissioner who is dependent on the President. The fact that the outcome of the report of the Commission of Inquiry which was assembled by the government which was not in power by the time this killing took place is not being considered as tangible evidence by the government which was in power by the time this killing happened is a proof in itself that this government knows what happened in the death of Chasowa. This action the police have taken is an indication that the Presidential powers need to be curbed as mentioned in the DPP manifesto, in which beyond halfway through the term Peter Mutharika hasn’t shown any interest, as an act of serious consideration to change yet.
