The leader of Opposition, Dr Lazarus Chakwera has told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that he is in full support of the 50+1 system of electing president and that he will give his all to support its implementation.
Speaking after meeting Public Accounts Committee delegation, Dr Lazarus Chakwera said that legitimacy of the Presidency in Malawi will only come with the system.
“This is a way to go and i will support the implementation of the 50+1 system of electing a president,” he said.
He added that resources will be found to support re-runs if the need arises.
“People are complaining about the cost that will come with the system but what they should know is that democracy is not cheap and we must pay the costs,” he added.
The chairperson of Pac, Felix Chingota also said that Pac want the
System implemented so that the country should be governed by Presidents chosen by majority of Malawians.
“With the current system presidents who have been chosen by minorities end up governing us, so we want a change to this,” he said.
Pac met Chakwera today to discuss among other issues the electoral reforms as 2019 elections are fast approaching.
