The Malawi Congress Party has said maize will become one of the country's commercial crops once it takes over the government on May 21st 2019.
The partys spokesperson in matters related to finance, Alexandar Dzonzi said that maize can make Malawians alot of money.
"Our cash crops are not doing good on the international markets so there is a need to introduce other crops on the world market," he said.
He added that Maize can bring billions to Malawi because it is grown across the country.
"We must say the truth here maize is easy to grow, its grown in almost all the disricts in the country than is the case with these other crops," he added.
Dzonzi said MCP knows markets where maize fetches better prices.
"The lowest price a 50kg bag of Maize can fetch on the markets we know is K15000," he said.
Dzonzi also refused to preempt the contents of the MCP manifesto which its launch is scheduled for 1st March 2019.
"I cannot talk much about what is in the manifesto, it will be revealed at the launch," he said.
Malawi depends on tobacco as the major cash crop, but with the anti-smoking campaign, the crop has over the years been fetching low prices which has for sometime been affecting the progression of the countrys economy.
