Minister of Industry Honourable Roy Kachale Banda and Minister of Trade Honourable Sosten Gwengwe today visited Malawi Bureau of Standards office at Songwe border in Karonga to appreciate the way the Bureau is working in ensuring quality compliance among business players using the border.
The visit is part of a series of visits the two ministers are expected to conduct in some major borders of the country to appreciate the way Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is working as well as appreciating challenges the Bureau is facing and see how government can come in with effecting policies that would provide solutions to the challenges.
During the tour at Songwe, MBS director general Mr Symon Mandala while commending the two ministers for the visit complained that shortage of staff houses is one major challenge the Bureau is facing at Songwe.
Minister of Industry Roy Kachale Banda said government is working towards improving certification of products being exported to other countries to prevent instances where Malawi products fail to satisfy international certification requirements.
“This will be done through the Standards Quality Assurance Accreditation and Metrology (SQAM)project being Implemented by Malawi Bureau of Standards under the supervision of Ministry of Industry” said the Honourable Minister.
Minister of Trade Honourable Sosten Gwengwe has since disclosed that design for one stop center border post at Songwe will be approved by end of next week.
