President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCathy Chakwera today, 26 March 2021, launched the construction of a Multipurpose Sports Complex near the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
Upon completion, the Sports Complex is to house an Olympic Standard Swimming Pool, Netball Court, Indoor Football Court, Volleyball Court, Basketball Court, and a Gymnasium.
The Sports Complex will be the first of its kind in Malawi.
President Chakwera has however named the Sports Complex, ‘The Griffin Saenda Multipurpose Sports Complex’ in honour of the longest serving Netball Coach for the Malawi National Netball Team, the Queens.
The Construction works of the Sports Complex started in January 2021 and is expected to finish in September 2022.
Meanwhile, President Chakwera has bemoaned the slow pace of the construction of Houses for Security Officers like Police, Army and Immigration which he launched over 100days ago.
The State President assured Malawians that every project he is to launch will at all cost be completed as per the given period.
Malawi has lived for many years without a reliable indoor sports complex nor a magnificent Netballcourt and has been relying on College of Medicine sports complex which does not stand an international standard.
